एक सही कदम - A Right Step
कोरोना महामारी के कारण लॉकडाउन से सबको अपने घर वापस लौटना पड़ा। इस कारण कितनों की नौकरी चली गयी। बस मानो एक ही काम बच गया - औरतों को घर का काम और पुरुषों को घर में रहकर अपने बीवी-बच्चों के ऊपर गुस्सा करना, चीखना-चिल्लाना, मारना-पीटना।
हाँ यह भी हो सकता है कि हर घर में हिंसा न होती हो, पर लॉकडाउन के कारण जहाँ नहीं भी थी वहाँ भी हिंसा होने लगी। लॉकडाउन ने बाहर जितना शांत माहौल बनाया अंदर उतना ही शोर मचाया। आइए माया की कहानी से इसको जानते हैं।
माया एक पढ़ी-लिखी महिला है। उसने B.A तक की पढ़ाई की है। एक गृहिणी भी है। वह झारखंड के रामनगर शहर में रहती है। घर में चार लोग हैं - सास, ससुर, पति रणवीर और माया। उसकी शादी के 3 साल हुए हैं। उसका पति एक हफ्ते में घर एक ही बार आता था क्योंकि उसका होटल घर से दूर था। वो अपने होटल के कामों में व्यस्त रहता था। उसके घर पर माँ और पत्नी के बीच रोज किसी न किसी बात को लेकर लड़ाई-झगड़ा होता था। इस बात से वह अनजान था।
माया कुछ बच्चों को ट्यूशन पढ़ाती थी जो उसकी सास को एकदम पसंद नहीं था। जब रणवीर घर आता था तो कभी कभी उसकी माँ उसको बताया करती थी। माया भी अपने पति को बताती तो उसका पति माया को ही समझा देता था। कभी कभी माया पर चिल्ला भी देता था।
रणवीर बोलता : ये सब सुनकर मैं परेशान हो गया हूँ। एक ही बात पर हर रोज लड़ाई! चाहे वो खाना बनाना हो या घर के बाकी सारे काम. घर पर तीन ही लोग हो तो भी क्यों झगड़ा होता है? माया बोलती : मुझे इन सब कामों से कोई समस्या नहीं है। पर माँ जी को मेरा बच्चों को पढ़ाना अच्छा नहीं लगता है।
माया अपने ससुरजी को बोलती कि पिताजी माँ जी को समझाइए। तब माया का ससुर अपनी पत्नी से बात करता है।
उसकी सास अपने पति को कहती : क्या मैं गलत बोलती हूँ? बच्चों को पढ़ाने की क्या जरूरत है ? घर में काम कम है क्या ? पैसे भी पति के पास कम हैं क्या जो अब इसे भी कमाने की जरूरत है ?
सास अपनी पति की बात को अनसुना कर देती और वहाँ से गुस्सा होकर अपने कमरे में चली जाती है। माया इन सबसे परेशान रहती थी क्योंकि उसको बच्चों को पढ़ाना अच्छा लगता है। घर में झगड़े की वजह बन गया था यह। रणवीर कभी कभी माया पर हाथ भी उठा देता था और फिर चला जाता था। माया उसी गुस्से में घर का काम किया करती थी। ज्यादा किसी से बात भी नहीं करती थी। दुखी रहती थी सोचती थी
हम पर क्यूँ करते हो अत्याचार?
हम भी तो तुम्हारे परिवार।
सास के व्यवहार में तो कोई बदलाव नहीं आता था, लेकिन ससुर उसे समझाते थे। तो माया थोड़ा शांत होती. एक बार फिर रणवीर घर आया। वही झगड़ा चालू हुआ।
रणवीर ने अपनी माँ से बात की : माँ, क्या बुराई है पढ़ाने में ?
माँ फिर वही बोलती है: क्या करेगी पढ़ाकर ? क्या होगा इससे ? क्यूँ करना है ?
रणवीर अपनी माँ को अच्छे से समझाता है : माँ, माया को पढ़ाना अच्छा लगता है। और घर में अकेली क्या करेगी ? वो घर के सारे काम तो करती है। उसके बाद समय निकालकर पढ़ाती है तो क्या परेशानी है ?
माँ कुछ नहीं कहती है और वहाँ से चली जाती है। फिर वो माया को भी समझाता है : माया तुम माँ से मुँह न लगाया करो। इससे बात सिर्फ बिगड़ती है।
माया कहती है : रणवीर, मैं नहीं बोलना चाहती हूँ। माँजी मुझे कई बार गाली देती हैं, वह भी बच्चों के सामने. तो अच्छा नहीं लगता। इसी तरह बात करते करते वो दोनों सो जाते है।
रणवीर अगली सुबह अपने काम पर वापस चला जाता है। फिर उसकी सास माया को ताना देने लगाती है। इन सब बातों से माया अक्सर परेशान रहने लगी। एक दिन रणवीर के पिता परेशान होकर अपनी पत्नी को समझाते हैं। दोनों में काफी बातें होती हैं, फिर पति के गुस्सा हो जाने के डर से सास माया को बोलना कम कर देती है।
इसी तरह दिन निकल रहा था, तभी लॉकडाउन हो गया क्योंकि पूरे देश में कोरोना फैल रहा था। सब बंद हो गया तो रणवीर भी घर वापस आ गया। उसकी कमाई बंद होने का कोई असर नहीं हुआ! रणवीर का खुद का होटल था।
पैसों की कोई कमी नहीं थी।
कुछ दिन के बाद फिर माया बच्चों को पढ़ा रही थी तो उसकी सास बोलती है : अभी तो सब बंद है तो बच्चों को पढ़ाना क्या ज़रूरी है?
इस पर माया बोलती है : माँ जी ये बच्चे तो आसपास के ही हैं. तो इनको पढ़ाना क्यों बंद करें? वैसे भी स्कूल बंद है. उससे बच्चों की पढ़ाई का नुकसान हो रहा है. कम से कम यहाँ तो पढ़ेंगे. इससे मेरी कुछ कमाई भी हो जाएगी। इस लॉकडाउन में और कोई काम भी नहीं है। रही बात साफ-सफाई की तो बच्चे साफ-सुथरा ही रहते हैं। हमारे आसपास के ही बच्चे हैं. और ये सब छोड़िए असल बात है कि मुझे पढ़ाना पसंद है। लेकिन सास बोलती है कि कोई जरूरत नहीं है पढ़ाने की और बच्चों को भगा देती है।
माया बोलती है : माँ जी ये आप क्या कर रही हैं?
जवाब में उसकी सास उसे गालियाँ देने लगती है. माया को गुस्सा आता है।
वो चिल्लाकर बोलती है : माँ जी, ये हर रोज की गाली-गलौज, ताना बंद कीजिए. अब बस भी कीजिए. आप ऐसा क्यों करती हैं ? आज तो अपने हद ही कर दी कि बच्चों को भगा दिया।
दोनों को लड़ते देखकर रणवीर वहाँ आ जाता है, रणवीर और माया के बीच बात बढ़ जाती है।
वह माया पर हाथ उठा देता है। उसकी माँ वहाँ से चली जाती है। फिर रणवीर के पिताजी आते हैं और रणवीर पर गुस्सा करते हैं। माया अपने कमरे में चली जाती है और बहुत रोती हैं। सोचती है कि ये हब हद से ज्यादा ही हो गया। वह अपनी माँ को सारी बात बताती है। उसकी माँ रणवीर को फोन करके डाँटती है और बोलती है कि अगर उसने माया पर दोबारा हाथ उठाया तो हमसे बुरा कोई नहीं होगा।
रणवीर कुछ नहीं बोला और उसने फोन रख दिया। रणवीर को आराम से काम लेना चाहिए था।
वह पढ़ा-लिखा है, B.Sc तक की पढ़ाई की है उसने। उसका खुद का एक अच्छा खासा होटल था।
हर रोज अलग अलग लोग से मिलता था। पर उसका भी व्यवहार दिनो दिन बुरा ही होता जा रहा था।
अब रणवीर माया पर हर बात पर चिल्लाने लगा। जब तब उसका हाथ उठने लगा। 2 महीने इसी तरह बीत गए. बात को बिगड़ती देखकर माया ने सोचा कि मेरे साथ जो कभी नहीं हुआ वह इस लॉकडॉउन में हो रहा है. सारा दोष इस लॉकडाउन का ही है। वो दो महीने से परेशान थी. अपने पति से भी नहीं बात कर रही थी. वो फैसला लेती है कि अब और नहीं. बिना बहुत सोचे समझे वह अपने मायके चली जाती है. मायके जाकर वह सबको सबकुछ बताती है. माया खुद पढ़ी-लिखी थी। उसे सही गलत की समझ थी। इसलिए वह अपने माता पिता की मदद लेती है। तब उसके घर वाले उसके ससुराल वालों से बोलते हैं कि आपलोगों ने जो किया है वह सही नहीं है. हम चाहते तो आपको इस बात की सजा भी दिला सकते हैं.
रणवीर के पिताजी बोलते हैं : नहीं, नहीं. देखिए यह हमदोनों के बच्चों की बात है. हम मानते हैं कि हमारी गलती है.
इस पर माया के पिताजी कहते हैं कि या तो रणवीर माया से माफी माँगे या सजा के लिए तैयार हो जाए.
और ये सब बात माया के कहने पर उसके पिताजी बोलते हैं. नहीं तो पहले माया के पिताजी बोले थे कि बेटा इस तरह की बातें होती रहती हैं. तुमको इस तरह अपना घर नहीं छोड़ना चाहिए. माँ भी यही बात माया को समझा रही थी.
माया बोलती है : अगर मैं आप सब पर बोझ हूँ तो मै कहीं और चली जाती हूँ. इस तरह से हिंसा मैं नहीं सह सकती, और वो रोने लगती है. माया का गुस्सा देखकर उसके पिता बोलते हैं कि बताओ कि तुम क्या चाहती हो ? माया ने कहा कि या तो मुझसे माफी माँगें वो लोग या तो रणवीर तलाक दे दे मुझे।
यह बात सुनकर सब चिंता में पड़ जाते हैं। उसके पिता अपने तरीके से रणवीर बात करते हैं. तब भी रणवीर नहीं आता है. दूसरी बार वो तलाक की बात सुनकर परेशान हो जाता है।
उसके बाद वह माया को फोन करता है. पर माया उससे बात नहीं करती।
अगली सुबह रणवीर माया से मिलने जाता हैं। वह माया से बात करता है, लेकिन माफी नहीं माँगता है।
फिर माया की माँ से बात करता है।
माया की माँ रणवीर से बोलती है : देखो तुमने गलती की है। वो खैर मानो कि माया पुलिस के पास नहीं गई। एक तो तुम्हारी माँ बिना मतलब की बात पर माया से लड़ाई करती है ऊपर से तुमने बिना कुछ सोचे समझे उस पर हाथ उठाया। अब उससे माफी माँगो, नहीं तो किसी को पता नहीं कि आगे क्या होगा।
रणवीर सोचता है और फिर माया से माफी माँग लेता है।
माया बोलती है : अभी तुमने माफी माँग ली है, लेकिन क्या भरोसा है कि कल तुम वो गलती दोबारा नहीं करोगे ?
रणवीर बोलता है : अगर मैंने दोबारा तुम पर हाथ उठाया तो तुम मुझे जो सजा देनी है दे देना।
माया के माता पिता भी बोलते हैं : बेटा एक मौका दे दो।
आखिर माया मान जाती है और वापस ससुराल चली जाती हैं।
उधर रणवीर के पिता अपनी पत्नी को समझाते हैं : बेवजह लड़ाई करके अपने बेटे का बसा बसाया घर मत खराब करो।
सास को भी डर हो जाता है कि कहीं उनके बेटे की शादी ना टूट जाए। इसलिए वो भी माया के साथ अच्छे से पेश आने लगती हैं. और अब सब शांति से रहते हैं. पैसे की कमी नहीं थी तो ज्यादा चिंता भी नहीं है। माया को आसपास वाले भी सराहते हैं। कहते हैं कि माया तुमने ठीक किया नहीं तो ये सब बढ़ भी सकता था और तुम और मुसीबत में फँस जाती।
माया फिर से अपनी पसंद का काम करती है यानी बच्चों को पढ़ाती है। बीमारी को ध्यान में रखते हुए वो सारी सावधानियाँ बरतती है. बच्चों को भी अच्छे से रहने को सिखाती है। सच में एक सही कदम बहुत कुछ बदल देता है। बस जरूरत है हिम्मत दिखाने की।
Due to pandemic, many daily wage workers and migrant workers had to come back home. Many have lost their jobs and livelihood. There is just one job left, that is home chores for women and for men it was screaming, shouting and picking up fights . The pandemic has triggered violence in many houses where it was previously nonexistent. The lockdown quietened the world outside and created noises inside the homes. Here I narrate the story of Maya.
Maya is an educated woman and has studied till college. She is a home-maker and lives in Ramnagar city of Jharkhand. She lives with her in-laws and husband and has been married for three years. Her husband, Ranveer, owned a hotel and used to come back home only once in a week. There were constant fights between Maya’s mother-in-law and her but he was unaware of this.
Maya loved teaching and used to take tuition classes for some children from the neighbourhood. Her mother-in-law disapproved of it totally. She would complain about it to her son. When Maya would try to speak to Ranveer about her mother-in-law's behavior he would always divert her or ask her to shut up or sometimes even shout at her.
Ranveer would say that he was tired of hearing about these fights everyday. He couldn’t see a reason for these fights when there were just 4 members in the family and the work was just home chores. To this Maya would replied that she has no problem in completing the home chores, but she really loves teaching and his mother is creating a hindrance in that.
Maya then one day tries to speak with her father-in-law. She asks him to speak to her mother-in-law and maybe this could make things better. When he tried, his wife said, “Do I say anything wrong? What is the need to teach children? She has sufficient work at home. Does Ranveer earn less money that she needs to earn too?”. She would then ignore her husband and leave the room in anger. This became a bone of contention between Maya and her mother-in-law. They would quarrel everyday. Ranveer had now turned violent on Maya. Feeling alone, Maya felt unhappy and did not speak with anyone. She would think, - Why are they torturing me? We are all a family.
Maya’s mother-in-law's behavior did not change, even when her husband tried. One day Ranveer confronted her mother and asked her, “Mother, what is wrong in teaching?”. To which his mother would give the same old reply that is, “Why does she have to teach? What will come out of this? Why do it at all?”
Ranveer would then try to make her understand that Maya loves to teach and she did that after completing the household chores. If she wanted to teach in her free time then it shouldn’t be a problem. His mother would pay no attention to what he pleaded. Ranveer then asked Maya not to confront his mother. Maya would then say, “Ranveer, I don't even want to speak with Maaji (mother-in-law), she abuses me many times, and that too in front of the children, this does not look good.”
This routine continued and then the lockdown happens. Ranveer too started staying at home. Since he is the owner of the hotel, his earnings were impacted but there was no shortage of money.
After a few days, Maya was again teaching the children, when her mother-in-law interrupted and said, “Everything is closed now, why do you have to teach the children?”. To which Maya replied that these were children from the neighbourhood only, schools were closed and their studies should not be impacted by it. She also shared that this also earns her some money which is important in the current times as there are no jobs. The most important reason was that she loved teaching. The mother-in-law payed no heed to her and drove away the children. They then had a fight where Maya’s mother-in-law abused her. Maya then gets angry and shouted at her to stop her taunts and abuse. It was then that Ranveer entered the scene and blamed Maya for the scene. In a state of total helplessness, Maya called her mother, and narrated her plight. Her mother scolded Ranveer and asked him to mend is ways. It was not expected from a well-to-do educated man like him to raise a hand on his wife.
Fights between Maya and her husband had become a routine. This continued for months. Maya would often think how her life had changed completely because of COVID-19. This continued for months until she finally decided to go back to her mother’s place. She the shared everything with her parents and they then approached her in-laws. Maya had asked her father to tell her husband and his family that either Ranveer apologises, or they register a case against him. Maya’s father was not first inclined in saying this because he somewhere believed that such incidents were common in families and leaving one's household is no solution to that. Maya had to fight her parents and she asked them if she was a burden on them, because if she was, she could live somewhere else. She was educated and would have gotten a job. Maya decides to either get an apology or a divorce. Ranveer pays no heed to it in the first warning but later when he tries to speak with Maya, she denies. Next day, he came to her and only after Maya’s mother’s warning did he apologise. Maya could not trust his apology and she believed that he would come back to his old ways once she returns back. Ranveer convinces her of his sincerity, meanwhile his father too convinces his wife to not ruin their son’s marriage for her own faults. This improved the mother-in-laws behaviour towards Maya. Her neighbours too appreciate her courage for being bold and solving the problem before it got worse.
Maya then resumed giving tuition classes to her students. She took all the necessary precautions and continued doing what she loved. It is wonderful what one little step of courage could do. The most important thing one needs is “courage”.
