This is about young girls, young voices and the community. And we feel proud to be one of these voices. It’s true when you talk you get solutions. If anyone has proved this statement right, it’s our girls from the Tech Centre in Jharkhand who believe in talking about everything related to their lives and finding solutions to it. When you listen to their dialogue, you know they are taking away something concrete from it. Their conviction is apparent from the very attitude and approach these fearless girls have taken to address the issue of child marriage in their community. 

 

During past few classes, the girls have been sharing that other girls from their community who go to school with them are all married. One of the girls who come to Tech Centre is married too. Discussion is not the only thing they do, they then decided to act upon it and do something concrete and big. They took it in their hands to find a way to abate the problem of child marriage in the area. So, in August 2016, they decided to organize an event at community level around gender discrimination and child marriage to facilitate a conversation around it with their community members. To support the girls’ initiative, the event was organised by our local partner Abhivyakti Foundation in association us. It was motivating for us to see the girls taking such bold steps. They invited their families, neighbors, community members and leaders. 

 

It was a great achievement for us looking at the challenges we faced during the preparations of the event. Compared to the hurdles, the happiness post the event was much greater. The event was held at two places – Kalyandih on the 24th August and Pethiyatad on the 25th August - where various activities like painting, slogan writing, poem recitation, debate, etc., were organised by the girls. Besides our Tech Centre girls, many of their peers from their community participated in these activities. Our girls also prepared a nukkad natak (street play) for the event in a very short span of time. While debating on the topic of child marriage, they vented out their emotions in their words, which made everyone speechless. The themes for slogan writing, poem recitation, debate competition and street play were decided all based on the main issue being highlighted, gender discrimination and child marriage. The community people appreciated the initiative of the girls. Many mothers declared that they have decided to let their girls study as long as they want.

 

“Sometimes when you’re given hurdles, it makes you more creative in the end.” Our girls lived this quote by Judy Greer in its truest sense. During the event preparations, boys from nearby areas tried to pose difficulties for the girls, catcalling them and making statements like “What is a girl’s honour?” Even though it was demotivating, we decided to sit among these boys’ groups and talk to them. The girls tried to make them understand the purpose behind the event and asked them to support in whatever capacity they can. 

 

 

From inviting guests for the event to deciding on the agenda, we had mere four days to do all the arrangements. Many things were happening simultaneously. We were worried if an event like this could be organised in such short period, and when we shared this thought with girls, all they said was “we can do it and we will achieve it”. This made our day. The girls planned the event, divided themselves into groups, distributed the work and took the responsibility for almost everything. They managed the stage all by themselves. Organising such an event at community level was a first time experience for all the girls from Jharkhand Tech Centre. However, looking at their enthusiasm and confidence, it didn’t seem so. 

 

Although the execution was smooth, rain played the spoilsport. The event was organised in an open ground and the heavy rain made it all mucky and watery. Even this could not deter our girls’. Few of them started to fill the pits with sand. This event has made us strong and sturdy like a rock. We overcame the boys’ comments and heavy rains to achieve our goal. We were worried that we may not receive much attendance due to the rains, but more than 700 hundred people in total attended the two days!

 

Working with girls for this event and watching them taking the lead was quite a learning experience for us as young leaders. All through the event our hearts were pounding with the fear that something would go wrong. But there was also a hope that we will achieve it and take it to the end. The credit of this success goes to the girls from our Giridih Tech Centre, the emerging girl leaders of Jharkhand, who worked round the clock to make the event possible.

यह युवा लड़कियों के बारे में है, युवतीओं की आवाज़/राय और समुदाय के बारे में| और हमे गर्व है की इन आवाज़ों में एक आवाज़ हमारी भी है| यह सच है की जब आप संवाद करते है तो उस संवाद से हमे समाधान मिलता है| अगर इस व्याक्य की पुष्टि किसी ने की है तो वो है झारखण्ड में हमारी टेक सेण्टर की लड़किया, जो बातचीत द्वारा अपनी ज़िन्दगी की समस्यायों का हल करने में विश्वास रखती है| जब आप उनकी बातों पर गौर करते है, तो कुछ ठोस सीख मिलती है – उनकी दृढ़ता समुदाय में बाल विवाह के मुद्दे को लेकर उनके बेख़ौफ़ नज़रिए और मनोभाव में साफ़ झलकता है| 

 

पिछले कुछ सत्र के दौरान, लड़कियों ने बताया की उनकी समुदाय की लड़किया जो उनके उम्र की है, उनके साथ स्कूल में पढ़ती है, सबकी शादी हो चुकी है| टेक सेण्टर में आने वाली लड़कियों में से एक लड़की शादीशुदा भी है| सिर्फ बातचीत ही नहीं, पर उस बातचीत से मिली सीख पर इन लडकियों ने सक्रियता भी दिखाई| अपने क्षेत्र में चली आ रही बाल विवाह की प्रथा पर रोक लगाने के लिए उन्होंने अगस्त २०१६ में समुदाय स्तर पर एक कार्यक्रम का आयोजन करने का फैसला किया| जेंडर आधारित भेद-भाव और बाल विवाह के मुद्दे पर समुदाय के स्तर पर एक संवाद आरम्भ करने के मकसद से इसे हमारे लोकल साथी संस्था, अभिव्यक्ति फाउंडेशन के साथ मिलके फैट ने आयोजित किया| लड़कियों ने अपने परिवार के सदस्यों, पड़ोसियों, अन्य समुदाय के सदस्य और लीडर्स को आमंत्रित किया – उनकी पहल और आत्मबल को देख कर हम बहुत प्रेरित हुए| 

 

हमारे लिए यह बहुत बड़ी उपलब्धि थी क्यूंकि चुनौतियां भी बहुत ज़्यादा थी| बाधायों की तुलना में कार्यक्रम संपन्न होने का हर्ष कई ज़्यादा था| प्रोग्राम दो जगह आयोजित किया गया था – २४ अगस्त को कल्यांदीह में, और २५ अगस्त को पेठियातंद में – जहाँ पेंटिंग, स्लोगन लिखना, कविता पाठ, वाद-विवाद का आयोजन भी लड़कियों ने लिया था – इन गतिविधियों को भेद-भाव और बाल विवाह के मुद्दों से जोड़ा गया | टेक सेण्टर की लड़कियों के अलावा बाकी लोगों ने भी इसमें भाग लिया| लड़कियों ने बहुत कम समय के अन्दर एक नुक्कड़ नाटक को तैयार करके प्रस्तुत किया| बाल विवाह के संधर्भ में अपनी राय देते वक़्त लडकियाँ काफी भावुक थी जिससे वहाँ के माहोल में गंभीरता आ गयी और सब चुप पड़ गए|  समुदाय के लोगों ने लड़कियों की इस प्रयास को काफी सराहा, और उन सबकी माँ ने एलान किया की वो अपनी बेटियों को उनके मन मुताबिक पढ़ने देंगी| जुडी ग्रीर ने कहा है, “कभी कभी जब आपको बाधाएँ मिलती है, वो अंत में आपको और सर्जनात्मक (creative) बना देता है” (अंग्रेजी से अनुवाद)| इस वक्तव्य का बहुत बड़ा उदाहरण लड़कियों ने दिखाया| कार्यक्रम को आयोजन करने के दौरान आस-पास के क्षेत्रों के लड़कों ने बहुत तंग किया – सिटी बजाना, छेड़ना, बोलना की ‘लड़कियों की क्या इज्ज़त?’ हाला की लड़कियों को यह बहुत ख़राब लगा, उन्होंने जाके लड़को से बात कर, उन्हें समझाने की कोशिश की, और कहा की वो भी हमारी मदद करें| 

 

 

मेहमानों को आमंत्रित करने से लेके एजेंडा बनाने तक, हमारे पास सिर्फ चार दिन थ| कई चीज़े हमे साथ साथ करना पड़ रहा था – हमे संदेह हो रहा था पर जब हमने लड़कियों से पूछा की चार दिन में मिलके हम इसका आयोजन कर पाएंगे की नहीं, तो उनका कहना था की, “हम कर सकते है, और हम करके दिखाएंगे!” उनका जोश देखके हमारी शंका भी दूर हो गयी| लड़कियों ने कार्यक्रम की योजना खुद बनाई और ग्रुप्स बनाके खुद में काम बाँट लिया| उन्होंने मंच भी खुद संभाला – सामुदायिक स्तर पे यह गिरिडीह टेक सेण्टर की लड़कियों का पहला कार्यक्रम था – पर उनके जोश और आत्मविश्वास को देखकर एसा लग नहीं रहा था| 

 

सब कुछ ठीक से होने के बावजूद, बारिश ने थोडा तंग ज़रूर किया| कार्यक्रम का आयोजन खुली जगह पे होने के कारण कीचड़ हो रहा था – लेकिन लड़कियों को कुछ रोक नहीं सकता था – उन्होंने गड्ढों को रेत से भरना शुरू कर दिया| इस अनुभव ने हमे और शसक्त बना दिया है| लड़कों के comments और बारिश की कठिनाइयों के बावजूद हमने अपना लक्ष्य पूरा किया| हमे चिंता थी की बारिश की वजह से ज़्यादा लोग नहीं आएँगे; पर इन दो दिनों में 700 से ऊपर लोग आए थे| 

 

कार्यक्रम के दौरान लड़कियों को आगे बढ़के काम करते देख हमे यंग लीडर्स बन्ने की बड़ी सीख मिली| पुरे समय हमे घबराहट थी की कुछ गड़बड़ होगा पर यह उम्मीद भी थी की हम अंत में सफल होंगे| इस सफलता का श्रेय गिरिडीह टेक सेण्टर की उभरती हुई लीडर्स को जाता है जिन्होंने दिन-रात एक कर इस कार्यक्रम को मुमकिन बनाया है|
