My name is Varsha and I have been coming to FAT for over three years. My association with FAT started with computer classes at the Tech Center, but I stayed on as they introduced camera/photography classes. At first I did not even know how to hold a camera, but I learnt a lot in FAT’s class. In this class the girls collectively decided on a topic that affects us all to make a movie. The name of the movie was “Apna Haq” (our right), and it was about sanitation rights.

Initially I used to go to FAT after school, but had to leave it for a while due to my board exams. Three months later I came back to FAT as a volunteer, and soon I was offered an internship opportunity. I was very happy, but at the same time I was scared that I might make a mistake. Rekha was a great support at every step of the way.

At FAT I got the opportunity to go out to Himachal Pradesh for a workshop. I was very excited, and immediately went to tell my parents about it. My mother was not very happy at first, but she eventually gave me the permission to go. My brother asked her how she’s allowing me to go so far away since she hasn’t even let him go anywhere, to which she responded that he was too young right now, and he can go when he is older. I have had to overcome many such problems.

While packing warm clothes for the trip I caught myself wondering about Himachal Pradesh and what it would be like. It was very hot in the bus on the day we were supposed to leave, but I was excited and having a wonderful time. The trip did not seem real, and I thought I was dreaming. I spent the night thinking about what the place and the people would be like. We stopped at a restaurant at night, and as the hours passed we could see glimpses of the mountains approaching us.

The next morning we got ready for the first day of the workshop. All the participants at the workshop introduced themselves, and it was lovely talking to so many new people. We discussed many topics like “Men and Women; who’s number one?” and where do transgenders come in this order?

We also played fun games at the workshop, after which we went for some dinner where we continued the discussion before bed.

The next day we sang a song before the workshop began, after which we talked about patriarchy and how it surrounds us. We discussed what is the meaning of gender? What is a gender box? and who comes inside this box? Next we saw a very interesting movie called “Mirch Masala.”

Me, Renu and Dipika woke up seven in the morning and started cooking. Our third day at the workshop began at nine where we discussed sexuality which had us all giggling. We were divided into groups where we discussed our sexuality where I was able to discover my sexual preference.

After the workshop we went sightseeing where we took a bath in a river and clicked lots of pictures. Dipika lost her slipper in the water, but had a lovely time roaming barefoot. Himachal is a beautiful place and we had a lot of fun.

On the fourth day we learnt how to defend ourselves. The instructor’s name was Divya who taught us many self-defence techniques. They demonstrated different ways in which we can be attacked, and are not able to defend ourselves. Now I am confident that if I ever face any such problem outside I’ll be able to face it with expertise. I want to thank FAT for giving me this wonderful opportunity and I look forward to more such events in the future.

मेरा नाम वर्षा है | मुझे फैट से जुड़े तीन साल हो गए है | फैट में मैं कम्प्युटर सीखने आया करती थी, फिर यहाँ धीरे-धीरे कैमरा क्लास भी होने लगा | हम सभी लड़कियों ने एक मुद्दे पर फिल्म बनायी जिसका नाम था "अपना हक़" | इस फिल्म को  बना कर मुझे बहुत अच्छा लगा, और बहुत कुछ सीखने को मिला | पहले तो मुझे कैमरा भी पकड़ना नहीं आता था| 

में यहाँ पर सीखने भी आती थी और स्कूल भी जाती थी | तीन महीने के लिए मुझे फैट छोड़ना पड़ा क्यूंकी मेरी बारहवी की परीक्षा थी | जब में वापस आई तो मैने फैट में तीन महीने के लिए वॉलंटियर किया, उसके बाद मुझे फैट ने एक इंटर्नशिप का मौका दिया |  मुझे यह बात सुनकर बहुत खुशी हुई, पर मुझे कही ना कही यह डर था कि कहीं मुझसे कोई गलती ना हो जाए | रेखा ने मेरी बहुत मदद करी | मुझे अगर कुछ समझ नहीं आता तो मैं रेखा से पुंछ लेती हूँ, और वो मुझे बहुत अच्छे से समझती है |

फैट में मुझे शहेर के बाहर जाने का मौका मिला, हमें एक वर्कशॉप के लिए हिमाचल प्रदेश जाना था | यह सुनकर मैं बहुत खुश हुई और मैने उसी दिन घर पर इसके बारे में बात की | मेने बोला की मुझे फैट ने एक मोका दिया है वर्कशॉप के लिए हिमाचल जाने का | मेरी मम्मी थोड़ा सा गुस्सा हुई पर कुछ देर में मान गयी | मेरा भाई मम्मी से बोल रहा था कि तुम इस को इतनी दूर कैसे भेज रही हो? तुम ने मुझे भी कभी इतनी दूर अकेले नहीं जाने दिया, तो इस को कैसे जाने दे रही हो? मम्मी ने कहा कि तू अभी छोटा है, जब तू बड़ा हो जायेगा तो तू भी बहार जाना |

मैने हिमाचल जाने की तैयारी करना शुरू कर दी और बहुत सारे गरम कपड़े रखे | तैयारी करते समय मैं हिमाचल के बारे में सोच रही थी कि वाह कैसा होगा? जब हम हिमाचल जाने के लिए बस में बैठे तो बहुत गर्मी लग रही थी | जैसे-जैसे बस चली मुझे बहुत मज़ा आ रहा था और मुझे यकीन नहीं हो रहा था कि हम हिमाचल जा रहे है | मुझे लग रहा था कि मैं एक सपना देख रही हूँ | पूरी रात मैने बस मे यही सोचा कि वहाँ के लोग कैसे होंगे, वहाँ का वातावरण कैसा होगा? रात को बस थोड़ी देर के लिए एक ढाबे पर रुकी, हम ने खाना खाया और फिर से बस में बैठ गए | जैसे-जैसे सुबह हो रही थी हमारी बस पहाड़ो के नज़दीक आ रही थी | हमें वर्कशॉप के लिए देर हो गयी थी तो हम जल्दी से नहा धोकर तैयार हो गए | हम अपने पहले दिन के वर्कशॉप के लिए पहुँच गए | एक–एक कर के सभी ने अपना परिचय दिया | मुझे सभी से बात कर के बहुत खुशी हुई | वर्कशॉप मे यह चर्चा हो रही थी कि पहले नंबर पर कौन आता है - महिला या पुरुष? और ट्रांस लोग कौन से नंबर पर आते हैं? वर्कशॉप के समय हमने बहुत सारी गेम खेली और बहुत सारी मस्ती की | वर्कशॉप ख़त्म होते ही हम सब खाने नीचे आ गए | खाना खाने के बाद हम सब अपने–अपने कमरे में आकर सो गए | 

दूसरे दिन हम सभी ने एक गाना गाकर वर्कशॉप शुरू की | अब वर्कशॉप मे हमने पितृसत्ता पर बात की - हमे पितृसत्ता ने कैसे घेरा हुआ है? कैसे पूरी दुनिया मे इसका जाल फैला हुआ है, इस बात पर बहुत सारी चर्चा की | हम ने शाम को जेंडर पर बातचीत की कि जेंडर क्या होता है? जेंडर बॉक्स क्या है? कौन जेंडर बॉक्स के अंदर है? और कौन जेंडर बॉक्स के बाहर है ? इन सभी मुद्दो पर अपनी समझ बधाई | फिर हमने एक फिल्म देखी जिसका नाम मिर्च मसाला था | बहुत ही दिलचस्ब फिल्म थी |

अगले दिन हम सुबह सात बजे उठे और मै, रेनू, और दीपिका रसौई घर मे खाना बना रहे थे | हमारी वर्कशॉप रोज़ नौ बजे चालू हो गयी | तीसरे दिन में हमने यौनिकता पर बात शुरू करी और सभी हसने लगे | हम सभी ने चर्चा कि हमारी यौनिकता क्या है? हमें बताया गया की यौनिकता हमारी इच्छा है | यौनिकता की वर्कशॉप से मैने यह जाना कि मेरी यौनिक इच्छा क्या है |

वर्क शॉप ख्तम होने के बाद हम सभी घूमने गए | पहाड़ो मे बहुत मजा आ रहा था | हमने एक नदी मे भी नाहया और बहुत सारी फोटो भी खींची | दीपिका की चपल पानी मे बह गयी और उसे नंगे पाव जाना पड़ा | हिमाचल बहुत ही खूबसूरत था |

चौथा दिन हमने सीखा की अपनी आत्म सुरक्षा कैसे करनी चाहिए  | पहले हमने गेम खेली, फिर गाना गाया, फिर एक-एक कर सभी ने अपना परिचय दिया | गेम में सभी को पूरी ताक़त से एक फत्ता तोड़ना था, और मेरा फत्ता दूसरी बारी मे टूट गया | हमने सीखा कि ताक़त मे ताक़त लगाना नही होता | जिंहोने हमारी वर्कशॉप ली थी उन का नाम दिव्या था | दिव्या ने हमे बहुत सारे तरीके बताए कि हमें बाहर अपनी आत्म सुरक्षा कैसे करनी चाहिए | उन्होने ने छोटे–छोटे नाटक किए जिससे पता चला कि बाहर हमारे साथ किस-किस प्रकार कि हिंसा होती है, और हम कुछ बोल नहीं पाते | इस वर्कशॉप से मैने बहुत कुछ सीखा | अगर कभी बाहर मुझ पर कोई ऐसे हमला करेगा तो मे उसका डट कर सामना करुगी | मैं फैट का धन्यवाद करना चाहती हूँ कि फैट ने मुझे इतना अच्छा मोका दिया, और आगे भी मै ऐसे मोके लेना चाहती हु |
