This is the story of Nilam Kumari who has something to say to those in the society that look at women with a negative lens. Nilam lives in Maniklalo, a small village, about 8 km from Jharkhand's Giridih district headquarters. Nilam lives with her parents and the economic condition of her family is not great. Her father earns barely 200-300 rupees a day by operating a manual cart. In the society where Nilam lives, girls are considered to be a burden and their marriage is done as soon as possible. Nilam’s elder sister was married off as a child and her parents wanted Nilam to marry as a child too, because of which she used to be often disturbed. Whenever she got the opportunity, she shared her thoughts with others in her school. She wanted to do something against child marriage but could not find the courage to do so. As she grew up, more and more restrictions were being placed on her. She could not do anything os she wanted nor could she go anywhere. It was when the villagers started spying on her whereabouts that made her feel like it had become too much to handle. It was during this time, she met with Sinty from the Tech Center. Sinty told her about the activities and objectives of the tech center in detail and asked her to join the tech center, and she accepted it because she felt it was probably the space she was looking for.
When she first joined the Tech Center, Nilam mostly kept to herself and did not mix with the other girls. She was afraid to share her thoughts with anyone there. She had lost her self-confidence in the patriarchal society. The Facilitators of the Tech Center worked hard on renourishing the self-confidence she had lost. After continuous talks with her, giving her opportunities to participate in workshops and programs, and letting her handle the operational responsibilities of several programs, her self-confidence started to grow slowly. She started speaking her mind in a very rational manner. The space and platform she found in the Tech Center gave Nilam a chance to make a difference. It was only a matter of time before Nilam got involved in the fight against child marriage. As soon as she comes to know that there is talk of marrying off a young girl in the village, Nilam goes alone to her house and tells her mother about the ill effects of child marriage, and sometimes the law. When Nilam succeeds in stopping a marriage, her confidence increases and she gets even more involved in the work. So far, Nilam has managed to stop three child marriages by her efforts.
Neelam not only completed the computer course at the Tech Center, but also took part in all the activities there and absorbed every learning opportunity. Today, Neelam lives 8 kilometers from her village and studies in a city; but she comes regularly to the Tech Center. She says that going to Tech Center, powered by Abhivyakti Foundation and FAT was the biggest turning point in her life. Today Nilam is not only continually refining herself but also helping other girls of the Tech Center move forward in life. Today she is a source of inspiration for her home, village and society. Nilam’s dream is to be a teacher of social science and she is working towards this dream. She wants to become a teacher so that she can teach girls to fight for their rights from a young age and raise their voice against social evils

यह कहानी है नीलम कुमारी की, जो कुछ कहना चाहती है समाज के उन लोगों से जो औरतों को केवल बुराई की नज़र से देखते हैं। नीलम झारखण्ड के गिरिडीह जिला मुख्यालय से करीब 8 किमी दूर एक छोटे से गांव मनिकलालो में रहती है। एक गरीब परिवार में अपने माता-पिता के साथ रहने वाली नीलम के परिवार की आर्थिक स्थिति अच्छी नहीं है। उसके पिता ठेला चलाकर रोजाना बमुश्किल 200-300 रूपये कमा पाते हैं। जिस समाज में नीलम रहती है वहां लड़कियों को बोझ समझा जाता है और उनकी शादी जल्द से जल्द कर दी जाती है। नीलम की बड़ी बहन का बाल विवाह हुआ था और उसके माता-पिता नीलम का भी बाल विवाह करना चाहते थे जिसके कारण वह अकसर परेशान रहा करती थी। उसे जब भी मौका मिलता वह अपने स्कूल में अपनी सोच दूसरों के साथ साझा करती। वह बाल विवाह के खिलाफ कुछ करना चाहती थी पर अन्दर से हिम्मत नहीं जुटा पा रही थी। बड़े होने के साथ-साथ नीलम पर पाबंदियां और भी बढ़ने लगी, वह न अपने मन की कुछ कर पाती ना ही कहीं जा पाती। हद तो तब हो गयी जब गांव वालों ने उसकी जासूसी तक करना शुरू कर दिया, इससे वह और भी जकड़ सी गयी थी। इसी बीच उसकी मुलाकात टेक सेंटर की सिंटि से हुई। सिन्टी ने उसे टेक सेंटर की गतिविधियों और उद्देश्यों के बारे में विस्तार से बाताया और उसे टेक सेंटर जाॅइन करने को कहा और वह मान गयी क्योंकि शायद यही वह जगह थी जिसकी नीलम को शिद्दत से तलाश थी।
टेक सेंटर के शुरूआती दिनों में नीलम अधिकतर गुमसुम सी रहती थी, बाकि लड़कियों के साथ घुल मिल नहीं पाती थी। उसके मन में एक डर सा घर कर गया था कि वह अपने मन की बाते किसी के साथ साझा नहीं कर सकती। इस पितृसत्तात्मक समाज में वह अपना आत्मविश्वास खो चुकी थी। इसी आत्मविश्वास को बढ़ाने का काम किया टेक सेंटर की फसिलिटेटर्स ने। उसके साथ लगातार बात-चीत, कई कार्यशालाओं व कार्यक्रमों में उसकी प्रतिभागिता, कई कार्यक्रमों की संचालन जिम्मेदारी मिलने से उसके अन्दर का आत्मविश्वास अब धीरे-धीरे बढ़ने लगा था। वह अपनी बातों को बड़े ही तर्कसंगत तरीके से रखने लगी। टेक सेंटर में मिले स्पेस ने नीलम को निखरने का मौका दिया। बस अब देर किस बात की थी, नीलम बाल विवाह के विरूद्ध अपने अभियान को अंजाम तक पहुंचाने में जुट गयी । उसे जैसे ही पता चलता कि गांव में किसी कम उम्र की लड़की की शादी की बात चल रही है, नीलम अकेले ही उसके घर जा पहुंचती और उसकी की मां को तर्कसंगत तरीके से बाल विवाह के कुप्रभावों के बारे में बताती और कभी-कभी कानून का भी भय दिखाती। जैसे ही नीलम को एक शादी रूकवाने में सफलता मिली उसका आत्मविश्वास और बढ़ गया और वह इस काम में लग गयी। अब तक नीलम अपने प्रयास से तीन ऐसे शादियों को रूकवाने में कामयाब हुई है।
नीलम ने टेक सेंटर में न सिर्फ कम्प्यूटर कोर्स पूरा किया, बल्कि वहां की सारी गतिविधियों में बढ़-चढ़ कर हिस्सा लिया और वहां से मिली हर सीख को स्वयं में आत्मसात किया। आज नीलम आपने गांव से 8 कि.मी. दूर शहर जाकर पढ़ाई कर रही है, साथ ही टेक सेंटर भी नियमित आती है। वह कहती है कि अभिव्यक्ति फाउण्डेशन और फैट द्वारा संचालित टेक सेंटर में जाना उसके जीवन का सबसे बड़ा टर्निंग पाॅइंट रहा है। आज नीलम न सिर्फ खुद को और निखारने में लगी है, बल्कि टेक सेंटर की दूसरी लड़कियों को भी आगे बढ़ने में मदद करती है। आज वह अपने घर, गांव व समाज के लिए प्रेरणा स्रोत है। नीलम का सपना है सामाजिक विज्ञान का टीचर बनना और वह इस दिशा में प्रयासरत भी है। वह टीचर इसलिए बनना चाहती है जिससे कि वह शुरू से ही लड़कियों को अपने हक के लिए लड़ना सिखा सके और सामाजिक बुराईयों के खिलाफ आवाज उठा सके।
