From a student to a trainer: an amazing journey

It’s always nice to live away from home because family members usually cause some interruption or the other. Whether one is interested or not, one has to do all the work at home. A few days back, I went to Vadodara in Gujarat representing FAT there. I went there to teach photography and filmmaking to adolescent girls of an organization named Sahiyar. Sahiyar has been working for over 20 years now, especially on women’s rights. While this wasn’t my first experience of teaching or training—I had earlier been to a Delhi-based organization named Udhyam to teach computers to the adolescents there—I had never been outside the city of Delhi before. That is why this experience was special and interesting.

I was travelling alone in a train for the first time. And that too, so far away from Delhi: all the way to Gujarat. I was very thrilled but also deeply scared from inside. It wasn’t going to be easy—to teach adolescent girls of a far away and different city. I boarded the night train at 10 and reached Vadodara the next morning. It was an entirely new place and I was going to be alone there. As soon as I arrived, I took an auto and went to my hostel, a place where other working women from cities outside were staying. I met Khushboo there, the hostel in-charge who took care of all administration. After enquiring about my room and food, I got a tiffin service arranged for myself for the next 12 days.

Most of the dishes cooked in Gujarat have a sweet flavour and taste. Even the dal is slightly sweet. The first time I had their food, I felt everything tasted sweet. I had never eaten such sweet tasting dal and vegetables before. Since I wasn’t used to this kind of food preparation, I requested my tiffin aunty to please refrain from putting any sweet ingredients in her food preparation for me! I was sharing my room in the hostel with a few other girls. After talking to them for a while, I left to see the town. Since I had little knowledge about the city, I did not venture too far.

I had to begin taking classes in Sahiyar next day onwards. Earlier that night, I had worked on preparing the curriculum for what I was about to teach. I was making a curriculum for the first time in my life without anyone’s help. I faced several difficulties while drafting it; I couldn’t understand how I would make it in just two hours. Somehow, I drafted one and started preparing for the class. It took me three hours to make the curriculum and I took classes for a total of 12 days. It was a very different and amazing experience. Some of the girls there did not speak Hindi very well. I was wondering how would I communicate with them but in a few days, I picked up Gujarati language and could understand some parts of it. The local language was not that complicated. I had assumed in my mind that speaking and understanding Gujarati would be a very difficult task. Some of the words in Gujarati were the same as in Hindi.

Along with the classes, we also had a lot of fun! With the help of some interactive activities, I explained the concept of gender to the girls. Is sex and gender the same? Or are they different? How gender keeps us caught and restricted. Every day I went with a new thought and used the medium of photos to explain different socially relevant issues to the girls. I found this exercise to be extremely delightful. It made me recall the day when I myself entered the Tech Center in the role of a student and took the classes. I used to trouble everyone there. I was always ready to ask several questions. But each of my questions was met with patiently worded answers at FAT’s Tech Center. Whatever I learned there then, I taught here now.

My experience with the girls was quite exciting. The girls were very affable and accommodating. We became friends very soon. They used to get food for me from their homes and we all used to eat together. I also worked with the girls to create a photo story that illustrated gender discrimination faced by girls in a patriarchal society. I was eager to know the girls’ stories regarding their experience of experiencing discrimination but I knew that they wouldn’t share them immediately and easily with a stranger like me.

I needed to befriend the girls more closely so that they share their personal life stories with me without any hesitation or pressure. I held a meeting with them first in which we discussed stories about our everyday lives. This is something I have learned at FAT: when one needs to know more about someone’s life, one should share stories from one’s own life. I did something similar. I shared some of my own stories that were about the kind of discriminations I faced in my house. Gradually, I began to know more about the girls from their own stories.

The next day, I had to record the girls’ stories. I took their permission before doing so and they were all ready and on board. Before beginning the recording process, we discussed the issue of confidentiality and how important it was to maintain it—not revealing people’s names and complete addresses—so that no girl faces any trouble in the future. We recorded every girl’s story and made our own video story and movie out of it. We also organized a small film screening for the people at Sahiyar. I felt very happy and proud at that time. I was feeling confident and content with myself. Earlier, we were asking questions and today, we were answering people’s questions! People were now listening to my words with utmost attention. This realization was an entirely different feeling altogether. I began believing in myself a little more from then on.

Another memorable moment was when I accompanied the girls to their school. All the girls were studying in government schools. A special “baal divas” was being celebrated in their school wherein creative activities and fun-filled programs had been organized. I noted that the government schools in Gujarat were quite creative. The girls had made a chart on camera and they also showed it to their school teacher. They had made a collage of pictures as well as written about the cameras from the older and the new generation. All the teachers there also asked me to teach camera to them. At that moment, I felt like I had become a person of some worth; that I had now carved a different identity of my own. It was an unforgettable moment for me.

Along with some good experiences, there were also a few that were different and forced me to think deeply and critically. I felt that the society in Gujarat was slightly reserved and conservative. Whether it was a child or a grown up, everybody had a similar view about Delhi being an extremely unsafe city (especially for girls), in comparison to Vadodara where such unruly instances were rare. Because they believed that the girls there were “good” and polite. Faced with a society that believed in such thoughts, I did have a little difficulty regarding what to wear and what to speak but I also tried to hunt for ways in order to accommodate myself in that social structure. I also felt that whether it was Delhi or Gujarat, people’s attitudes towards women remained the same. Every place had a seemingly different but similar story.

Another instance comes to mind: once, I felt like wearing a garland of flowers on my head and I asked my roommates in the hostel to get me some. They stared at me in horror and told me that here, only sex workers wear flowers on their heads. If I do the same, everybody would think I am a sex worker and tease me. I faced several such rigid thoughts and beliefs during my stay there. However, the girls I stayed with also opened up and shared details about their thoughts and beliefs with me. I also told them about gender and patriarchy in great detail. We even spoke at length about sexuality. It was so much fun: every evening, we discussed some issue or the other. The best part was that the girls were opening up about these topics for the first time. With such experiences, I ended my journey to and from Gujarat.
